Asian Games: Shooting, wrestling win medals, badminton dissappoints

The second day of India's campaign was bittersweet. While shooting and wrestling provided medals, badminton disappointed. The women freestyle wrestlers made up for the lacklustre performance by the men yesterday, barring Bajrang Punia's gold. Three women entered the semifinals—Sakshi Malik (62kg), Pooja Dhanda (57kg) and Vinesh Phogat (50kg). Sakshi lost the semifinal 8-7 to Aisuluu Tynybekova of Krygyzstan, Pooja lost 10-0 to North Korea's Jong Myong Suk and Vinesh beat Uzbekistan's Yakhshimuratova Dauletbike 10-0 to reach the final.

Another eventful day in shooting for India. Deepak Kumar won silver in the men's 10m air rifle event, giving India its 50th medal in shooting at the Asian Games. He shot 247.7 to clinch the second spot.

Seema Tomar qualified for the finals of the women's trap event, but finished sixth, scoring 12 of her 25 shots.

Manavjit Singh Sandhu and Lakshay Sheoran qualified for the men's trap event final. Sandhu finished fourth with a score of 26, while Lakshay won silver.

In badminton, in which India hopes for a few medals, both the men's and women's teams were beaten by Indonesia and Japan respectively. P.V. Sindhu won her match against Japan's Akane Yamaguchi 21-18, 21-19, but the teams of N. Sikki Reddy and Arathi Sara Sunil, and P.V. Sindhu and Ashwini Ponnappa lost to Sayaka Hirota and Yuki Fukushima (15-21, 6-21) and Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahasi (13-21, 12-21) . Saina Nehwal lost 11-21, 25-23, 16-21 to Japan's Nozomi Okuhara.

In the men's team event, Kidambi Srikanth lost to Indonesia's Anthony Ginting 21-23, 22-20, 10-21. The doubles team of Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost 21-19, 19-21, 16-21 to Indonesia's Marcus Gideon and Kevin Sukamujlo. H.S. Prannoy beat Jonatan Christie 21-15, 19-21, 21-19. Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy lost to Muhammad Ardianto and Fajar Alfian 14-21, 21-18.

In tennis, Ankita Raina beat Indonesia's Gumulya Beatrice 6-2, 6-4 in the women's round of 32 match. Karman Kaur Thandi defeated Jarga Altansarnai from Mongolia 6-1, 6-0 in another round of 32 match. Ramkumar Ramanathan beat Wong Hong Kit from Hong Kong 6-0, 7-6 to enter the last 16 in the men's singles event.

In basketball, the Indian women lost to Unified Korea 104-54. In kabaddi, the women won 33-23 against Thailand, but the men's team went down to South Korea 23-24. In sepak takraw men's team regu event, India beat Iran 2-1, but lost to Indonesia 3-1. The women lost 2-1 to Laos. In handball, India beat Malaysia 45-19.
