In the mid-1990s, India made a quiet yet consequential decision. It decided that computer literacy was not optional, that a generation of children needed to understand the defining technology of their era before the economy moved without them. The results were imperfect, the implementation uneven, and the hardware often arrived in school labs with no trained teachers to use it. But the direction was right, and that instinct produced one of the most remarkable workforce stories of the twentieth century.
We are at a strikingly similar inflexion point today with artificial intelligence. The debate has focused on the wrong questions: whether AI will take jobs, whether students should use it in exams. These are not unimportant concerns. The more consequential question is whether this generation of Indian children will develop the fluency to command AI or simply be subject to it.
AI literacy, properly understood, is not a single skill. It begins with what Jensen Huang of Nvidia called the artistry of prompting: the ability to frame a question precisely enough that the output is actually useful. A well-formed prompt requires you to know what you do not know, to anticipate where a system might misunderstand you, and to iterate when the first answer misses. These habits of intellectual precision and disciplined questioning are the same habits that good education has always tried to build. AI makes them economically urgent in a way they have never been before.
Prompting is, however, only the beginning. Every major AI chatbot tells its users, in small print, that it may produce wrong answers. The companies know their systems hallucinate with confidence, presenting incorrect information in fluent prose indistinguishable from a reliable source. But a disclaimer is not a skill. A child who cannot independently tell right from wrong output is not using AI as a tool. They are being misled by one. Access without judgment leads to dependency, not fluency.
Underneath all of this sit the foundational skills that make it possible: enough coding to understand how systems are built, enough mathematical reasoning to interpret results rather than accept them, and enough language to have something worth saying before the machine helps you say it.
The convergence of views among the people building these systems is striking. Satya Nadella of Microsoft describes AI as bicycles for the mind, a scaffolding for human potential rather than a substitute. Sundar Pichai of Google firmly believes that access to computers changed his life and backed that belief with a $150 million commitment to AI education. Similarly, Dario Amodei of Anthropic describes advanced AI as a country of geniuses in a datacenter: cognitive capability at civilisational scale, available on demand. Sam Altman of OpenAI calls this the era of intelligence too cheap to meter. Every one of them points in the same direction: the defining inequality of this era will not be wealth or geography. It will be fluency.
The irony is that Indian schooling has spent decades training the opposite habit. From primary school to Class 12, the architecture is built around the correct answer. Students are rewarded for producing known answers quickly. A student who responds with a better question is not displaying sophistication. They are displaying a failure to know the answer. The system produces students who are excellent at receiving information and underprepared for directing an intelligent system.
India's NEP 2020 and the Ministry of Education's October 2025 mandate, introducing AI and computational thinking from Class 3, signal that policymakers understand something is changing. But the deeper reform required is not a new subject on the timetable. It is a different relationship between teacher and student inside every existing subject, one that rewards questioning over recall and critical thinking over confident reproduction. And it requires the human system around the technology to be taken as seriously as the technology itself. A child guided by a skilled teacher learns to question AI, direct it, and think beyond it. A child left alone with a chatbot learns only to depend on it.
Computer literacy became a national priority in India because enough people recognised that the cost of not acting was higher than the cost of acting imperfectly. AI literacy is at that same point. The children in Class 1 today will be in the workforce by 2040. The question is whether we will prepare them to shape that world, or leave them to be shaped by it.
