The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red (CDPR) sent ripples throughout the gaming community on Wednesday, after it announced on social media that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is receiving a third major story expansion, titled Songs of the Past.

The new addition to the video game franchise is set to launch in 2027, marking an impressive 11-year milestone since the release of The Witcher 3.

On Wednesday the studio wrote on their website:

“Medallion’s humming ... that can only mean one thing! It’s time to announce we’re working on a brand new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt!”

CDPR further revealed that players will again take on the role of Geralt of Rivia—the beloved protagonist of the very first Witcher game from 18 years ago.

Introducing this extension is a strategic move by the franchise to bridge the gap between the end of the current TW3 era and the release of their next major game, The Witcher 4, which is not expected to be out until 2027 or later.

Songs of the Past, co-developed by Fool’s Theory, will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and the Xbox Series X|S—but not on Nintendo Switch, much to fans’ disappointment.

CDPR has also posted that they would be updating their system requirements “to ensure smooth performance and compatibility going forward for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Songs of the Past”.

While this isn’t a concern for most players, those who wish to avoid the update can revert to earlier versions of the game, such as version 4.04, or any other version prior to the 4.05 patch that will launch with the expansion.

Notably, the minimum PC requirements for the game include having Windows 11 and an SSD.

“Only processors supported on Windows 11 will be supported by us," CDPR has said. Due to these developments, fans have high expectations for the game’s animation, rendering, texturing, and lighting.

The other minimum PC requirements as per CDPR’s announcement are as follows:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600, Intel Core i5-8400

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660, AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB

VRAM: 6 GB

RAM: 12 GB

Storage: 70 GB SSD

OS: 64-bit Windows 11
