After a long wait, Rockstar Games has finally given gamers a clearer picture of what to expect from the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI)—even if it meant we got two more iterations of Fantastic Four and Batman, and a new Superman on the silver screen, and two Hideo Kojima AAA games since GTA V!

While the initial excitement of GTA VI was sparked by the surprise drop of its first trailer on YouTube in December 2023, the second trailer released in May 2025 took the gaming world by storm with new details about the game’s story, characters, and the sprawling world of Leonida.

What we know so far about GTA VI

GTA VI will introduce players to a new pair of protagonists, Lucia and Jason.

In a first for the series, the game will feature a female lead in Lucia.

The duo is portrayed as a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde, caught in a criminal conspiracy that will take them through the neon-drenched streets of Vice City and beyond.

Developer Rockstar Games describes their journey as a high-stakes battle for survival: “Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida—forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.”

Wait, we are in Vice City again?

More or less. The game is set in the fictional state of Leonida, a satirical take on Florida, with the iconic Vice City as its centrepiece.

Rockstar has promised that this will be the “biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet,” suggesting a massive and detailed open world for players to explore.

The second trailer, which came out in May, gave us a glimpse of various locations—including the Everglades-inspired “Grassrivers” and other questionable environments.

GTA VI release date for console and PC in India

No, unlike a lot of reports floating around, Rockstar Games themselves confirmed that the initial release would be exclusively for the PlayStation 5/5Pro and Xbox Series X/S consoles.

But we do have a release date for consoles—Grand Theft Auto VI will release on May 26, 2026. Full disclosure, the date was announced by Rockstar’s parent TakeTwo back in May on their investor presentation

However, the omission of the PC version at launch follows the recent approach Rockstar adopted for Red Dead Redemption 2 and even GTA V. The PC version might come later, with many gaming experts touting a late 2027, early 2028 window.

What will GTA VI cost in India?

Rockstar Games hasn’t announced an official price yet. However, the standard edition is expected to be north of ₹5,999. DLCs and special editions may see a price tag of even ₹7,499, according to some gaming pundits.

The Grand Theft Auto games are not just cultural milestones; they are also business achievements for TakeTwo, Rockstar’s parent.

In fact, TakeTwo reported back in May that the entire GTA franchise sold-in-nearly 450 million units—out of which, GTA V sold-in 215 million units.

GTA V also holds the honour for reaching $1 billion in retail sales faster than any entertainment release in history. In fact, it is the best-selling title of the past 10 years in the US, based on both unit and dollar sales, according to TakeTwo.

Funnily, Rockstar Games’s Red Dead Redemption 2 is also the best-selling title in the past 7 years in the US based on dollar sales.

Red Dead Redemption 2 fixed a lot of open-world issues that plagued GTA V. They did fix them in GTA Online, which means GTA VI might even get better.
