OpenAI chatbot ChatGPT faced a global outage on Tuesday, with users receiving error messages while trying to access the platform. Several users reported receiving error messages and did not receive responses to queries.

Error messages that read “Hmm … something seems to have gone wrong” and “A network error occurred” popped up across users' screens worldwide.

ChatGPT showed massive spikes on Downdetector, a platform that records server outages, with users in India and the US reporting the most errors.

In India, the spikes occurred at around 3:10 PM and over 500 users reported difficulties. The data showed that 93 per cent of the reported cases were related to ChatGPT specifically, 7 per cent concerned the OpenAI application and 1 per cent simply faced login difficulties.

Users also reported error messages on services like APIs and Sora. The outage has been affecting both free tier users and subscribers.

As a result, users took their complaints and commentaries to X. One post asked: “Should we be concerned that we're becoming too dependent on closed-source AI?”, while another asked everyone to “touch grass”.

OpenAI is yet to acknowledge the outage and confirm the cause of the errors. Outages like these can be caused by various issues such as hardware failures, software issues, network errors or cyber-attacks.
