Saudi Arabia is set to welcome over a million Hajj pilgrims from across the world in June. This time, the kingdom has taken measures to use artificial intelligence and smart technology to ease the sacred pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina.
According to the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina, a wide range of digital platforms are being deployed for the first time. These include the AI robot named Manarah 2, which is a second-generation robot that can guide the pilgrims. Deployed at the Grand Mosque, it has a 21-inch touchscreen, 5G network and high-resolution cameras.

Manarah 2 can speak in 11 languages and give automated answers to frequently asked questions on Islamic jurisprudence. For in-depth queries, the pilgrims will be connected to qualified Islamic scholars via video call. Besides Arabic and English, it can speak in Bengali, Malay and Urdu.
Ground sensors, gate readers and AI-enabled surveillance systems will also track crowd movements. In order to track a deluge of information and footage, including from an advanced fleet of drones, the presidency will use the latest AI software and get quick feedback. This will help avoid potential stampedes.
The authorities will also set up multilingual smart screens at the main locations to provide real-time information and assistance to serve the pilgrims.
A digital Quran platform will support recitation and learning while the Surat Al Fatiha app will enhance understanding of one of the Quran's most recited chapters.
Apart from these, specialised initiatives offering religious, intellectual and educational support for Hajj pilgrims from diverse backgrounds will also be used.
