A massive fire triggered by an explosion at the Oil India Limited facility in Assam's Dibrugarh district left at least one person feared dead and multiple others injured, prompting emergency firefighting and rescue operations.

At least one person was killed, and multiple others reportedly injured on Friday following a massive fire that broke out at the state-owned Oil India Limited (OIL) facility in Assam.

According to preliminary reports, the incident took place at 9:05 am at the Intermediate Tank Farm (ITF) premises at Tengakhat in the Dibrugarh district. The massive fire was reportedly triggered by an explosion that took place in the crude oil storage section of the tank farm. The exact cause of the explosion is yet to be determined.

At least five people were injured in the accident. Most of them were residents of Tengakhat, including 45-year-old Shailen Gogoi, 38-year-old Kumud Gogoi, 58-year-old Golap Dutta and 40-year-old Indra Gogoi. Tapas Gogoi, 40, from Milan Nagar, was also injured.

All five of them have been admitted to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, where they are undergoing treatment. Several others have also reportedly sustained injuries in the accident.

They were all reportedly employees of Spectron Engineers Private Limited, a Mumbai-based operation and maintenance (O&M) contractor that provided services to OIL.

"One person died, while six others sustained burn injuries and have been taken to Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh, and OIL Hospital," read the statement from Oil India Ltd.

The deceased, identified as Raju Dutta, was thrown far back because of the impact of the explosion.

Fire and emergency services personnel rushed to the spot and launched firefighting operations. They have been attempting to bring the blaze under control.

Meanwhile, another fire destroyed residential houses and commercial establishments in Assam’s Chaideo district. The fire started from a commercial establishment but turned worse as two LPG cylinders exploded amid the blaze.
