Five people died in a firing incident at a hotel in Guwahati, Assam, on Monday night following an alleged dispute between the property owner and the leaseholder.

Guwahati Commissioner of Police Partha Sarathi Mahanta said the incident took place around 9 pm at Hotel Bilas Inn in the Bora Service area of Guwahati. The police apprehended the accused within an hour.

“An unfortunate incident of firing took place today at around 9 pm at Hotel Bilas Inn in the Bora Service area of Guwahati. Six persons sustained gunshot injuries, and unfortunately, five of them succumbed to their injuries. One person is undergoing treatment,” he said.

Mahanta said the accused had been identified as Ghanakanta Gogoi, the leaseholder of the property. The police have also seized the weapon used in the incident.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, we suspect that the incident stemmed from a property dispute related to the lease agreement of Hotel Bilas Inn. The investigation is still at a preliminary stage,” Mahanta said.

According to the police, all the deceased were associated with the hotel owner. “Four of them belonged to the same family, and the other person was from their village. The injured person is also from the same village,” the commissioner said.

Mahanta said a scientific and thorough investigation was underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and bring the case to its logical conclusion.

Another officer told PTI that three of the deceased had been identified as Helena Bharali, Deborshi Kashyap and Narayan Das, while the identities of the others were being verified.

Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi expressed concern over the incident and criticised the Himanta Biswa Sarma government over the law-and-order situation in the state.

“This incident raises serious concerns about public safety and the law-and-order situation in Guwahati. As Chief Minister and Home Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma must take responsibility and pay more attention to rising crime,” Gogoi wrote in a post on X.
