Senior leaders of the Cockroach Janata Party, including Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka, and Ajinkya Shinde, were arrested by Delhi Police for allegedly trespassing at Jantar Mantar following its recent denotification as a designated protest site. Delhi Police have registered the arrest of senior leaders of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), including Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka and Ajinkya Shinde, for allegedly trespassing at Jantar Mantar.
The leaders were detained on Tuesday morning, a day after police denotified the iconic venue as a designated site for protests.
Confirming the activists’ arrest, CJP legal head Ratna Singh said they had been charged with trespass, violation of bail bond conditions and obstructing public servants in the discharge of their duties.
Singh said the activists would be produced before an SCM Court on Wednesday morning, adding that they could potentially be remanded to judicial custody at Tihar Jail.
“They were not allowed to meet their lawyers till late at night. They were brought to Parliament Street Police Station at 3 am in a private van. Despite these illegal actions, their spirits are high,” Singh wrote in a post on X.
Earlier, Singh had accused Delhi Police of acting arbitrarily and following orders from senior authorities in its handling of the activists.
“It has been nearly 24 hours, yet they have not been allowed to meet any lawyers, nor have they been initially informed of the grounds for their detention or arrest,” she had said.
On Tuesday, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke shared a video on X showing party members jumping over a gate to enter Jantar Mantar and raising slogans, including “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”. Police personnel can be seen rushing towards the protesters and detaining them.
“You cannot denotify the resistance,” Dipke wrote in the post.
Delhi Police recently withdrew Jantar Mantar’s designation as an authorised protest site, naming Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in east Delhi as alternative venues for demonstrations.
The move comes amid large-scale protests in the national capital over alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls, with demonstrators demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
