Traffic restrictions are set to continue in Delhi for a second consecutive day as the Cockroach Janta Party organizes a fresh protest at Jantar Mantar following widespread detentions and security crackdowns.
Traffic restrictions are likely to continue in Delhi for a second consecutive day on Sunday as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has called for another protest at Jantar Mantar, even as several of its top leaders remain in detention.
The Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory warning that traffic movement may be affected around Jantar Mantar, Connaught Place, Mandi House, Patel Chowk and several other intersections in Central Delhi. Diversions are likely at 30 key points across the city.
Traffic disruptions are also likely at Mandi House, the Minto Road–Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg junction, the Lodhi Road flyover, Neela Gumbad roundabout, the Samrat Hotel roundabout, the Sardar Patel Marg–Panchsheel Marg crossing, and the underpasses beneath the Bhikaji Cama Place and Moti Bagh flyovers.
The Delhi Police has urged commuters to avoid non-essential travel and allow additional time when travelling to railway stations, inter-state bus terminals and the airport.
At a press conference held at HKS Surjeet Bhawan on Saturday, CJP leader Ajinkya Shinde said the party would organise marches to Jantar Mantar daily until Gyanesh Kumar was removed from the post of Chief Election Commissioner. He also alleged that CJP leader Abhijeet Dipke and others had been subjected to inhuman treatment by the Delhi Police during detention.
Several student organisations, including the Students' Federation of India (SFI), have also announced that the protests will continue until their demands are met.
The CJP's renewed call for protests comes amid a major security crackdown across Delhi on Saturday, when police detained protesters, activists, political leaders and others at multiple locations, including along routes leading to Jantar Mantar.
Around 3,000 protesters detained ahead of Saturday's demonstration were released later in the day. However, the CJP's top leadership and YouTuber Dhruv Rathee remained in custody.
Addressing the press conference, Shinde, the CJP's national organisation in-charge, said the party would not back down despite the detentions.
"The government must have thought we will return home after the detentions today. This fear of Modi, Shah shows we have won half the fight," Shinde said.
There has been no order from the Delhi Metro authorities so far on restrictions in services. At least 45 Metro stations remained closed nearly 25 hours before being reopened at 10 pm on Saturday.
The affected stations included key transport hubs such as Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Patel Chowk, Janpath, Mandi House, ITO, Kashmere Gate and New Delhi. The curbs were imposed following a request from Delhi Police over concerns about possible crowd movement towards sensitive locations.
