Saurav Das, Abhijeet Dipke, and Ashutosh Ranka reached Delhi on Saturday ahead of the Jantar Mantar protests by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). However, they were unable to leave the airport as they were quickly led away by the police.
The Delhi Police entered the flight that Dipke was travelling in soon after it landed at IGI Airport.
Videos from the flight showed Delhi Police personnel telling Dipke that he didn't have permission to hold protests. Dipke was heard retorting that they could have told him this outside the aircraft and asking what right they had to board the plane.
Meanwhile CJP’s Ratna Singh and YouTuber Dhruv Rathee have also been detained. Here are five latest updates from the national capital where the Gen Z protestors are seemingly struggling to get past strong restrictions to reach the protest site:
- As of 9:00 am on Saturday, no fewer than 600 people were detained from across Delhi in connection with the "illegal" Jantar Mantar protest, The Times of India said in a report. Apart from CCTV cameras, drones are widely deployed to spot public gatherings, and special precautions are in place in border areas to keep entrants in check, reports added.
- All major roads and lanes leading to Jantar Mantar have been closed. Only those with valid identification and a valid reason for visiting are being allowed to proceed. Traffic has also been restricted on Ferozeshah Road, Barakhamba Road, Connaught Place, and other roads leading to Jantar Mantar.
- Multiple levels of barricading have been put up in the ITO and Mandi House areas, leading to massive traffic jams at ITO. All vehicles entering central Delhi are being thoroughly checked, and people are being asked to show identification documents.
- Delhi's Chhatrasal Stadium has been converted into a detention centre, where people detained from various locations are being brought, AajTak said in a report. The deployment at the stadium includes female personnel and senior Delhi Police personnel, and more and more vehicles carrying detained youths are arriving at the stadium, the report added.
- After the top CJP leadership was detained by the Delhi Police, the party claimed that the action was a pre-planned move to prevent them from reaching protest site. Their leaders were being detained in a violation of their freedom of movement, CJP alleged in a statement, further demanding the immediate, unconditional release of the three leaders.
