Mamata All India Trinamool Congress (MAITC) MLA Kunal Ghosh’s car was vandalised in Uttarpara in Hooghly district on Saturday afternoon while he was on his way to former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s rally. Ghosh was forced to turn back and go to Kolkata.

The Calcutta High Court (HC) had granted Mamata permission to hold a public rally at Sreerampur over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and the issue of the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

Ghosh alleged there was no police presence on the road when the attack took place. The MAITC MLA released a video showing Ghosh in the front passenger seat of the car. Protesters were hurling eggs, stones and bricks, shouting ‘Go back’ slogans. The car windscreen and the glass on the rear end of the car were broken in the attack, while he too was injured. Some protestors also waved black flags, Ghosh claimed. The MAITC MLA alleged that protestors surrounded his car and prevented his vehicle from moving forward.

Ghosh said that he would take the matter to the Criminal Investigation Department headquarters.

After Kunal Ghosh arrived at the CID headquarters in Bhawani Bhawan in Kolkata to show the condition of his vandalised car, he was allegedly not allowed to enter or speak to a police officer.

He said he had already filed a police complaint by email and had come to the CID HQ to show the car and question where the Uttarpara police were when the attack took place.

Angry protestors said they will not allow MAITC to hold a rally after years of wrongdoing while being in power. “We raised go back slogans. We don’t need them to hold a rally here,” one protester said. Local police later arrived to clear the protesting group.

“Where were they (MAITC leaders)when we were being beaten up?” another protester questioned, alleging that they were being removed by police while they were ‘peacefully’ protesting.

Before rushing to the spot where the incident took place on BT Road, Mamata said that law and order is in the government’s hands and that they should ‘cooperate’. “They (Her supporters) are being blocked. All BJP lumpens and supporters are blocking roads. I am rushing to the spot,” said Mamata.

The MAITC supremo said her party is virtually under house arrest, with the opposition not being allowed to protest and go to the people. Mamata drew parallels, saying that the situation in Bengal was not as bad as in other states. “I am shocked to say, there is no freedom, no right to vote, no right to freedom, no right to speak, no right to move,” added the former CM.

Mamata also said her party had got permission 15 days ago for the public meeting, which must be respected.

BJP denied involvement in the incident, saying that it is MAITC Sreerampore MP Kalyan Banerjee’s who had sent his supporters to prevent Ghosh from entering their domain.

BJP MP Rahul Sinha said, “Why are they trying to put their problems on BJP’s shoulders? Look closely, they are TMC supporters, and there is no need to drag BJP into this.”

BJP spokesperson Debjit Sarkar condemned the attack on an MLA's car. In the same breath, he asked: “Which egg was so powerful that it broke the car glass?”

TMC MP Dola Banerjee said, “We are seeing lawlessness in the last four months. The law of the land and the people will give a befitting answer."

Police tried to pacify the protesting crowd that refused to move from the spot even after Ghosh left. Central security forces rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control.
