IMD alert: Deep depression in Bay of Bengal to intensify; heavy rain in four states

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated in North Coastal Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday and Wednesday, with similar conditions expected in South Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana over the next three days. The low-pressure system is projected to become a 'Deep Depression' and make landfall by Wednesday morning, bringing extremely heavy rainfall to specific districts in Odisha. Authorities are preparing for the event, while fishermen have been advised to return to shore due to rough seas and expected strong winds of up to 75 kmph.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for a cyclone after the deep depression that has formed over the Bay of Bengal began moving towards the South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coast.
The weather phenomenon will cause heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places in North Coastal Andhra Pradesh over Tuesday and Wednesday. South Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Telangana will also witness heavy showers over the next three days.
“The low-pressure area will intensify into a 'Deep Depression' (intense low-pressure area) over the west-central Bay of Bengal by Tuesday. While moving west-northwestwards, it is very likely to reach the vicinity of the north Andhra Pradesh - south Odisha coasts around the morning of Wednesday up to the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal,” the IMD alert said.
Odisha will be one of the states that will be affected with the cyclone expected to reach the Odisha coast by Wednesday.
"The IMD has informed us that the low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is gradually intensifying and is likely to reach the South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coast on September 23 as a deep depression. We are making preparations accordingly," Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said.
Thunderstorms and moderate rain would increase from Tuesday. On Wednesday, there will be extremely heavy rainfall (of more than 20 cm) in Kandhamal, Gajapati, Ganjam and Puri districts. Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Rayagada districts will see heavy rainfall on Thursday.
Heavy rainfall is expected in South Bengal, including Kolkata, starting Tuesday, with isolated light to moderate rain possible until then. The low-pressure area will keep the sea rough, so fishermen have been advised to return to land by Monday.
The weather system is also expected to bring strong winds over the sea. Wind speeds of up to 60 kmph are likely over the Andaman Sea and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal on Sunday night.
Wind speeds are likely to increase up to 75 kmph over the westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal on September 23 and continue till the evening of September 24. Squally winds of 55-65 kmph are likely along and off the South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coasts from September 23 to the evening of September 24, the IMD said.
