A woman's decapitated body was found in her Guwahati residence, leading to her husband's arrest and confession to a brutal murder involving the severing of her fingers and head, with neighbours reporting frequent disputes.

A partially decomposed, decapitated body of a woman was recovered from the house in Guwahati’s Beltola area after neighbours called the police due to a foul smell.

The head of the victim was found wrapped in a plastic bag inside the refrigerator at her house.

The victim, Riya Talukdar, worked in a boutique. Her husband, the prime suspect, worked as a cab driver.

On Sunday, the neighbours called the police to complain about a foul smell emanating from the house.

Police reached the spot and found the decapitated body lying on the floor with the severed head in the fridge, an official said.

Investigators said that the killing was extremely brutal; the accused also cut off the victim’s fingers.

"The murder took place 24 to 48 hours ago as the body had started decomposing. The severed head was found in a polythene bag inside the refrigerator," a police official said.
The husband, Ramanujan Goswami, who is the prime suspect, reportedly surrendered to the police and confessed to the killing. There were also bloodstains found on the T-shirt he was wearing at the time of his surrender.

“After undergoing a medical examination, Goswami was taken to Hatigaon Police Station, where he is currently being questioned as investigators piece together the circumstances surrounding the killing,” police sources said.

Police officials said that Riay married Ramanujan around six months ago. They were living together in the flat, reports said.

A weapon was also seized from the premises. Forensic and fingerprint experts examined the crime scene.

Neighbours also reported hearing loud noises and cries from the flat on Saturday. They last saw Goswami around 8 pm on Saturday. They also said that the couple was frequently quarrelling.

The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.
