Heavy rains have continued to lash out in various parts of Delhi on Sunday, with traffic in many parts of the NCR slowing down.

Visuals on social media also show waterlogging in many key corridors, such as the areas around the Indira Gandhi International Airport and Mahipalpur, sparking concerns of how the weather will be during the BRICS Summit from September 12-13.

According to the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) latest forecast, the weather is expected to clear from Monday onwards, with scattered rainfall expected across the capital on September 11-12, as well as in Haryana and Chandigarh.

Though the specifics of the weather for September 13—the last day of the BRICS Summit, has not been released yet—the IMD has predicted that a Western Disturbance (WD) is all set to hit northwest India in the week of September 10-16.

It also added that the eastern and northeastern parts of India are expected to get heavy rainfall between September 10-13, due to a fresh upper air cyclonic circulation that may form over parts of the Bay of Bengal—leaving many other parts of the country, including Delhi, with below normal rainfall during the September 10-16 period.

This period is also likely to see maximum temperatures rising by 2°C or 3°C across not just Delhi, but also other parts of Northwest India.

Schools shut

The Delhi government has also announced that all schools—government, government-aided and private—will remain shut on September 11 in view of the 18th BRICS Summit at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

"All offices and schools under the directorate of education (including government aided and unaided recognised private schools) shall observe holiday on September 11, 2026," read a September 5 order signed by Vikas Kalia, Additional Director of Education.

Expected to bring together leaders from around 30 BRICS member and partner nations, as well as heads of international organisations and business representatives, the summit is expected to bring heavy traffic to more than 30 hotspots across Delhi.

The Delhi Traffic Police has issued a list of alternate routes to better manage traffic at or near roads likely to see heavy traffic.
