At least 10 students from Jawaharlal Nehru University accused a professor of sexual harassment with the university's internal complaint committee,
The complaints were submitted a month ago; the students alleged that the professor invited students to gatherings at his on-campus residence. He allegedly made lewd and sexual advance the students at the gatherings.
The complaint also said that the professor made lewd remarks during classes.
Several senior students came forward with similar allegations after an initial complaint was filed recently. The ICC is currently investigating the allegations.
Sources told News18 that the matter gained wider attention after senior students came forward with similar allegations following a more recent complaint against the professor.
They also said that there could be more complaints as the committee proceeds with its inquiries.
The JNU administration and the Vice-Chancellor’s Office have not yet stated a position on the matter. Further details about the incident are awaited.
The allegations include repeated inappropriate behaviour and sexually coloured remarks, which fall under sexual harassment as per UGC regulations.
The ICC, which is mandated to investigate sexual harassment complaints on campus under the Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal of Sexual Harassment Act, is currently examining the complaints. As part of the inquiry, the committee is expected to record statements of the complainants and the accused professors as part of its inquiry process.
There has been no police complaint made in connection with the case, according to the Deputy Commissioner of Police.
