As political parties prepare for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, a unique survey has come as a shocker for the BJP government in the state.

The "Mood of the Nation" (MOTN) survey, conducted by India Today and C-Voter, asked people who they would vote for if the Lok Sabha elections were held today. It revealed that the India Bloc would likely win 40 per cent of the votes in Uttar Pradesh, while the NDA could win just 42 per cent. However, the most significant outcome is in the number of seats. The India Bloc could win 41 seats in Uttar Pradesh, while the NDA could end up with just 38, the survey revealed.

Uttar Pradesh has 80 Lok Sabha seats. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won 33 seats, the Samajwadi Party 37 seats, the Congress six seats, and Apna Dal 2.

The survey, though irrelevant in the context of Parliamentary results, holds significance because the MOTN survey in January presented a completely different picture. At that time, the NDA was projected to win 48 seats and the India Bloc only 31. In a few months, the NDA's potential seats have decreased by 10, which implies a major political downturn.

Though the NDA is still ahead in vote share, the INDIA Bloc appears to be gaining ground in seat estimates. This is the most interesting part of this survey.
The survey also hinted that Gen Z could pose a significant headache for the BJP.

Yashwant Deshmukh, founder of C-Voter and election expert, believes that the youth protest could have an even greater political impact in Uttar Pradesh.

"People are currently talking about Gen Z's anger, but the real focus should be on Gen X. This is the generation that witnessed the Mandal era of 1989."

According to him, the debate surrounding the UGC's Equity Regulations has revived old memories for this generation. Concerns have grown, especially among families who fear these regulations could impact their children's education and future.
The UGC's Equity Regulations aim to address caste-based discrimination in educational institutions. These regulations are currently on hold, but have not been completely repealed. This is causing unease among a segment of the BJP's traditional general category vote bank.

In Uttar Pradesh, upper-caste communities like Brahmins and Kshatriyas have long been a strong vote bank for the BJP. Volunteers from these communities are reported to constitute over 20 per cent of the state's voters. Therefore, even a small portion of the vote, if it changes the election's direction, can have a significant impact on seats.
