Red alert in Delhi: How is heavy rain affecting your commute and flights?

Heavy Tuesday morning rains inundated low-lying areas across Delhi, triggering severe waterlogging at major intersections in the city and adjoining parts of the NCR. India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Delhi.
Commuters waded through flooded roads as severe waterlogging disrupted traffic. Reduced visibility caused by heavy rains and gusty winds led to widespread flight delays and cancellations, including 18 affected flights at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Several key areas across the capital, including regions near Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, AIIMS, Ashoka Road, and the Supreme Court, reported severe waterlogging.
Waterlogging was also reported near Baba Kharak Singh Marg, located next to Connaught Place’s Outer Circle.
Rain lashed several parts of the city, including Parliament Street, Connaught Place, AIIMS, ITO, RK Puram and Ferozeshah Road, among several other locations.
IMD has predicted moderate rain across many places in Delhi. Thunderstorms along with lightning and gusty winds are also likely to hit the state.
Yellow alerts are also in place for Gurugram and Faridabad as more rain is expected across the NCR. Meanwhile, Noida remains under heavy cloud cover, though no official weather warnings have been issued for the area.
On Monday too, flight operations were disrupted with at least 26 flights cancelled and 15 diverted to other cities. Over 300 flights were delayed.
Till August 24, Safdarjung recorded 246.2 mm against the normal 191.1 mm, an excess of 29 per cent. Palam received 227.2 mm, 28 per cent above normal, while Lodi Road recorded 233.2 mm, an excess of 22 per cent.
According to the IMD, the heavy downpour was caused by a mid-level western disturbance interacting with a low-pressure trough extending from Gangetic West Bengal to southwest Uttar Pradesh.
