A delegation led by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar has arrived in Lucknow on Monday for a two-day stay that will see the Election Commission officials engage youth and future voters, and hold events that strengthen the electoral system.
This has triggered speculations that the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh could be held early, considering the expected schedule of February-March could clash with the census.
The last Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh were held in seven phases between February and March 2022. The 2017 elections were also held in February-March 2017.
However, in 2027, the census is scheduled for February. It is usually teachers and government employees who get involved in both the census and election processes. Therefore, holding both events simultaneously seems unlikely.
Postponing either the elections or the census could also be considered, but this could clash with school and college examinations. In such a context, either the elections or the census could be conducted earlier.
Since the census will be conducted simultaneously across the country, there is talk of conducting the assembly elections before time. Major political parties have also intensified their preparations. Parties and leaders are also sending a message to their workers that the elections may be held before time, according to local media reports.
ECI delegation
The delegation will include Senior Deputy Election Commissioner Manish Garg, Director General (Media) Ashish Goyal, Director General (IT) Dr Seema Khanna, and other senior officials of the Commission.
Chief Election Commissioner will participate in an interactive session with students at the Awadh Auditorium of Colvin Taluqdars' College, where he is an alumnus.
Kumar will also attend a one-day regional conference on ELC 2.0 and ECINET as the chief guest at the Jupiter Hall of the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan in Lucknow, the statement said. Regional conferences on ELC and ECINET will be organised in three phases in Lucknow, Meerut, and Varanasi.
