Heavy rains are lashing parts of the Delhi NCR region, Noida and Ghaziabad, after the skies turned dark on Monday morning.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the region. The dark skies have caused motorists to drive with their lights on at 11 am.

The region also saw heavy rains on the weekend, bringing relief from the humid heat. Meteorologists have warned of thunderstorms in several areas for the rest of the afternoon until 2:20 pm. 

Delhi, along with parts of Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad, may receive heavy rainfall in the next few hours. The rains could last bout 45 to 60 minutes at a location. The IMD forecast said that affected regions can see rains of more than 15 mm per hour. 

Residents and motorists have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during the rain and to exercise caution in waterlogged areas.

The heavy rains are accompanied by winds gusting upto 30 to 40 kmph.

Parts of eastern and southern Delhi are also under a red alert, whereas western and central Delhi have been issued an orange alert. 

In Gurugram, traffic slowed down due to low visibility and waterlogging. In Delhi, vehicles were delayed by an hour near Sangam Vihar due to the rain. There was a massive traffic jam at MB Road.

The impact of the rains in the Delhi NCR may vary according to the region.

On Tuesday, there is only a "possibility" of very light rain during the afternoon. On Wednesday, a short spell of very light to light rain can be expected at a few places before noon. 

The rains are expected to stop by Thursday.

Meanwhile, a new low-pressure system has formed over the northwestern part of the Bay of Bengal and its surrounding areas.

The Meteorological Department said that it is expected to move northwest, cross northern Odisha, and the adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal, bringing heavy rains to Odisha, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Telengana and Andhra Pradesh.
