Two people were killed and several others are feared trapped after heavy rain triggered a landslide at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, near Rathod Medical in Mumbai’s Kurla, in the early hours of Wednesday.

The landslide occurred at around 3:48 am, officials said. DCP Ganesh Shinde confirmed that two bodies have been recovered so far, while search and rescue operations are underway.

Teams from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other agencies have been deployed at the site and are carrying out rescue operations.

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde also reached the spot to take stock of the situation and oversee the ongoing rescue efforts.

According to DCP Shinde, around four to five people are believed to be trapped under the debris. Two of the injured have been identified as 18-year-old Sohel Ansari, who suffered a head injury, and 14-year-old Mohamad Ansari, who sustained a back injury.

A senior BMC official told PTI that the access to the site is so narrow that only one person can enter at a time, making rescue operations difficult. The landslide was huge, with massive boulders crushing some huts, he said.

"Due to narrow lanes of hardly 3 to 3.5 feet, the debris has to be removed with the help of a wrecker and then manually removed with a bucket," the official added.
