About three people were killed, and several others were trapped following separate landslides in Kerala's Idukki and Kottayam districts on Saturday. Officials say that the heavy rains triggered floods and fresh landslides across the state.

There were three reported landslides in just Kottayam district alone.

One person, Josephine Johnny, was killed in landslides in Payyanithottam Vandan Plav in Poonjar Thekkekkara panchayat. A search is underway for his mother, who is feared to be trapped under the debris. Officials told PTI that several are feared trapped under debris in Kottayam district.

Heavy rain triggered widespread flooding in Erattupetta, Kanjirappally, Koottickal and Erumeli in the Kottayam district. Mundakkayam and Kootickal Causeways were also submerged after the Manimala Pullakayar rivers overflowed.

In Idukki, a woman, a resident of the Adoormla area near Kudayathoor, died after debris from a landslide struck her house early on Saturday. The district administration said that her husband and son were rescued by neighbours and admitted to a hospital in Thodupuzha after sustaining injuries. The house was destroyed in the disaster.

Her body was recovered by the National Disaster Response Force and Fire and Rescue Services, police and revenue departments.

In Vagamon, another landslide struck a house, killing Prabhakaran Nair, a native of Vaikom.

In Upputhara, Idukki, a parked police vehicle was damaged in the landslide. The Kokkayar low-level crossing (chappath) has been submerged due to the overflowing Pullakayar river. Several houses have been affected by the flood waters. The families have been moved to safer locations.

Several houses were destroyed in Idukki and Pathanamthitta. Two were injured in the mudslides.

A travel ban has been placed in the hilly areas of Pathanamthitta district.

Authorities have announced that they are opening the shutters of minor dams in the the Idukki district.

The IMD has forecasted heavy rainfall across Kerala and issued a red alert for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts. An orange alert was issued for Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Palakkad districts,

District administrations have declared school holidays in several districts.
