MPSC recruitment row: Congress says Maharashtra government has crushed Gen Z's dreams

Maharashtra Congress Chief spokesman Atul Londhe Patil on Thursday mentioned that the BJP-led Mahayuti government is anti-Gen Z and crushed the dreams, hopes and aspirations of the state's youth through a government resolution (GR) issued on July 20.

According to Patil, the government's new GR has cast a shadow over the dreams of young aspirants who aspire to become officers through direct recruitment via the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) by altering the 60:40 recruitment ratio for officer appointments. 

"This unjust GR must be withdrawn immediately. Otherwise, Gen Z and the youth will once again take to the streets and force the government to retreat," warned Patil.

Addressing a press conference at Tilak Bhavan, he said that if there were 100 officer posts, 66 per cent were earlier filled through direct recruitment by the MPSC, while 33 per cent were filled through promotions. However, the BJP government has issued a new GR changing this ratio. Under the new policy, 60 per cent of posts such as Deputy Collector and Tehsildar will now be filled through promotions, while only 40 per cent will be filled through direct recruitment. Similarly, 80 per cent of Naib Tehsildar posts will be filled through promotions, leaving only 20 per cent for direct recruitment. He said this GR is unjust to the lakhs of young people and their families who dream of becoming government officers.

Londhe further said that the Revenue Department has recently filled 160 posts through promotions, and Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has claimed that this will make the department more efficient. "Does that mean Mr Bawankule believes that officers recruited through direct recruitment are not efficient?" Patil questioned.

He added that nearly 3.2 million students in Pune alone prepare for the MPSC examinations. This new GR has shattered their dreams. "It is an attack on the aspirations of farmers, labourers, workers and ordinary families whose children strive to become government officers through merit. Their dream of securing an officer's post through direct recruitment will now remain just a dream. This is not a political issue," he said and urged the government to reconsider and withdraw the GR.
