Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast in several districts of Maharashtra over the next two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reportedly said. The weather department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in six districts of Vidarbha over the next 24 hours, Marathi media reports said on Thursday afternoon.
A red alert has been issued for Yavatmal and Amravati districts, while an orange alert has been issued for Washim, Akola, Wardha, and Chandrapur. Vidarbha should reportedly hope for a break from the torrential rains only by Saturday, August 1.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms is expected in Jalgaon district in the next 24 hours, TV9 Marathi said in a report.
In the Konkan region, a yellow alert has been issued for Ratnagiri district, the news report added. Winds are currently blowing at a speed of 40 to 45 km per hour along the coastal areas of the district, it said.
More rains in Telangana?
Meanwhile, neighbouring Telangana received widespread rainfall over the last few days after a prolonged deficiency, reported news agency PTI.
Gullakota in Jagtial district received 70.5 mm of rainfall until noon on Thursday, followed by 66.6 mm at Sirpur (U) in Kumram Bheem Asifabad district, the Telangana State Development Planning Society reportedly said.
As per PTI, Telangana's rainfall deficiency, which stood at 33 per cent until 15 days ago, had narrowed to 10 per cent by Thursday morning, according to the India Meteorological Department.
The IMD, in its weather warning, issued a 'red alert' for isolated places in Adilabad, Kumram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, and Jagtial districts, forecasting very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by strong surface winds from 1 pm on Thursday to 8.30 am on July 31. It said light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at most places over Telangana during the same period.
