Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital made a statement giving updates on Sonam Wangchuk’s health condition after he was moved to the hospital by Delhi Police on Saturday morning.

The hospital said that Wangchuk was "weak due to fasting and needs monitoring."

Wangchuk is currently on Day 21 of his indefinite hunger strike, which began at the Jantar Mantar.

"Sonam Wangchuck was received and admitted at Safdarjung hospital for required health care at 7.40 am today," read the hospital statement.

"He is weak due to prolonged fasting and dehydration. Although he is currently stable, he requires continuous observation, monitoring and treatment to restore his body parameters," the hospital added.

Police had whisked away the climate activist to the hospital under direction from the Delhi high court and medical advisors who said that his health was failing.

Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, objected to the medical treatment being administered to her husband without her consent.

She also questioned the need to hospitalise Wangchuk.

"He is at Safdarjung Hospital. I forbid them from administering anything without my consent. No treatment should start without my consent. I hold everybody accountable if anything happens," Angmo told PTI.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Sachin Sharma said that they followed the direction of the the high court.

"Following the directions of the High Court and according to the health conditions and medical advice, we have taken Sonam Wangchuk to the appropriate government hospital, which was a much-needed medical intervention and under medical supervision," Sharma told PTI.

There has also been a heavy deployment of Delhi police personnel at and around the Jantar Mantar after Wangchuk was removed. Barricades were erected to regulate the protestors' movement.

The police force also appealed to the demonstrators to end the protest peacefully at the earliest.
