Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee was interrogated for nearly 11 hours by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the alleged primary teachers' recruitment scam, stating he cooperated with the investigation while also criticizing the BJP for attempting to destabilize the opposition through MP defections, accusing them of a conspiracy to prevent opposition unity. Banerjee, who previously served as CEO of Leaps and Bounds Private Limited, is being investigated for allegations of funds being routed through SD Consultancy to his company, with investigators suspecting ₹95 lakh transfer, and although not directly named as an accused, he has been implicated in ED and CBI chargesheets, following earlier searches and his previous questioning in 2023, as the wider investigation into the illegal recruitment of 25,000 primary teachers and staff, declared invalid by the Supreme Court, continues, which has already led to the arrest of former minister Partha Chatterjee and the seizure of substantial assets.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee faced another intense round of questioning on Monday, as officials from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) interrogated him for nearly 11 hours in connection with the alleged primary teachers' recruitment scam. Abhishek reached the ED office in Salt Lake around 11 am and left around 10:15 pm.

“I have cooperated with investigations. They (ED) are doing their job. I cannot say whether there is political pressure because the less said, the better,” he said after coming out of the ED office.

Abhishek, however, lashed out at the BJP over the defection of 20 rebel TMC MPs, who have formed a separate bloc, merged with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), and aligned themselves with the NDA.

“It is a conspiracy to prevent the opposition leaders from being consolidated. Trying to break the party by poaching MPs and MLAs is of no use. They thought those who have crossed over due to fear of agencies would also include Mamata Banerjee, and we would ally with them. We will not go even if our throats are slit. We will fight," he said.

The MP said he had gone to the ED office whenever called and would go again if required in future. He noted that an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) had been registered four years ago and that a CBI investigation was initiated in June 2022, which subsequently led to the arrest of former education minister Partha Chatterjee.

Abhishek, who served as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Leaps and Bounds Private Limited, is under scrutiny over allegations that funds were routed through another company, SD Consultancy, before ultimately reaching Leaps and Bounds. The owner of SD Consultancy, Sujay Krishna Bhadra, was an employee of Leaps and Bounds. Investigators believe that ₹95 lakh was routed to Leaps and Bounds through SD Consultancy. Several other businessmen and companies are also allegedly involved in the cash-for-jobs scam.

The ED and the CBI chargesheets have named Abhishek in parallel investigations, though he has not been directly named as an accused. ED had conducted searches in 2023 at Leaps and Bounds office and a property of Bhadra’s son-in-law. Abhishek was questioned earlier by the ED in 2023.

As part of the investigation, the ED's Eastern Zonal office attached Rs 57.78 crore in January this year under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Investigators recovered Rs 50 crore in cash and almost Rs 5 crore worth of gold from Arpita Mukherjee, an accused and close aide of former education minister Partha Chatterjee. Chatterjee was arrested in July 2022.

In April 2025, the Supreme Court declared the recruitment of 25,000 primary teachers and non-teaching staff as invalid. Many appointments were illegal and were found to have been made in exchange for money, prompting an ED and CBI investigation.
