Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee woke up to see police from Salboni police station, along with Kolkata Police, at the doorstep of his Kalighat residence early on Saturday morning. The cops reached the MP’s house in the wee hours and forced their way in after a few hours to search for his personal assistant Sumit Roy.
He had allegedly taken money from people in exchange for election tickets. Police are searching for Roy to corroborate the claims made against him. They had reached Abhishek’s house following Roy’s location, but he was not there. One other person has been arrested so far in the case.
Abhishek was present in his house during the search. He has not issued any statement yet. Former chief minister Mamata Banerjee also arrived at his residence during the search and left around 8am.
The TMC MP has been facing the ire of investigating agencies with CID questioning him for almost six hours on Thursday at the headquarters at Bhawani Bhawan in connection with the signature forgery case that has divided the TMC into three camps, including in the state assembly and in Parliament.
Twenty-four hours later, CID also served summons to Abhishek on Friday in connection with another FIR on a controversial comment made related to DJ playing music post the May 4 assembly election results. The comments were made during an election rally in Arambagh in Hooghly district in April.
Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is conducting raids at multiple properties of TMC Kamarhati MLA Madan Mitra on Saturday morning in connection with the Kamarhati Municipality and other municipalities recruitment scam. Seven premises of the MLA are reportedly being searched.
Mitra reportedly received bribes in the form of cash and gold through middlemen in exchange for the appointment of incompetent candidates for around 125 various posts in different municipalities. Kamarhati falls within the North 24 Parganas district.
Mitra has been arrested twice in the past by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) – in December 2014 for the Saradha chit fund scam and in May 2021 for the Narada sting operation. He was the transport minister in 2014 and was accused of receiving bribes while promoting the chit fund company. The former minister was behind bars for 21 months and released later on a bond of ₹30 lakh.
