Amidst internal political challenges, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is facing widespread rumors of a potential merger with the Indian National Congress, fueled by meetings between TMC MPs Derek O’Brien and Abhishek Banerjee with Rahul Gandhi, and a prior discussion between TMC chief Mamata Banerjee and Sonia Gandhi. These speculations suggest Mamata Banerjee might be considering a merger to avert a party split and secure her leadership, with unconfirmed reports indicating the Congress high command offered such an option. However, TMC sources have actively dismissed these merger talks, asserting that recent discussions were solely focused on enhancing the INDIA bloc's coordination and strengthening opposition unity to counter the BJP in upcoming elections, a sentiment echoed by Congress sources who stated no formal merger proposal has been received or discussed, emphasizing a collaborative effort within the INDIA alliance rather than an organizational consolidation.

Amid its political crisis, the Trinamool Congress is battling rumours that it could be considering a merger with the Congress. Reports of a possible merger grew strong after MPs Derek O’Brien and Abhishek Banerjee, two of the eight MPs currently with TMC chief Mamata Banerjee amid the rebellion, met Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday morning.

The meeting also came soon after Mamata had a discussion with Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday. Speculations are that Mamata Banerjee is considering merging the TMC with the Congress to prevent the party from splitting and to avoid the leadership of the party slipping from her hands. Unconfirmed reports hint that the Congress high command offered Mamata Banerjee the opportunity to merge, which she is considering.

However, TMC sources dismissed the speculations, adding that there is no plan for any merger and the recent discussions focused only on strengthening the INDIA bloc coordination.

This comes soon as Congress Lok Sabha MP Imran Masood publicly called for a merger between the two parties. Calling it his personal opinion, the Saharanpur MP said a merger is a good option to prevent political fragmentation.

However, sources within Congress told reporters that there is so far no proposal from the TMC regarding the merger, nor has any such formal process was discussed between the two parties.

The Congress sources added that opposition parties are working on common issues and increasing cooperation to challenge the BJP in the upcoming elections. “In this context, there is ongoing dialogue between the constituent parties of the INDIA alliance. The recent talks between the TMC and Congress are primarily aimed at strengthening opposition unity, not organisational merger,” the sources added.
