Following the Congress party's victory in Karnataka, party president Mallikarjun Kharge appointed former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to the Congress Working Committee, a day before the new Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and a dozen ministers are set to be sworn in, with Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot administering the oath; this development comes after Siddaramaiah's resignation as CM, his refusal of a Rajya Sabha seat to focus on state politics, and negotiations in Delhi regarding the cabinet's composition, which has a limit of 34 ministers and may include multiple deputy chief ministers, with G. Paramaeshwara and Priyank Kharge as frontrunners and Siddaramaiah advocating for his son Yathindra, who is expected to receive a ministerial post, while the position of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president will be vacated by Shivakumar, with Senior MLA Satish Jarkiholi being a potential successor for either that role or a cabinet berth.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday appointed former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah as a member of the Congress Working Committee.

Siddaramaiah resigned as chief minister last week after the Congress high command asked him to step down. The party top brass have been pressing Siddaramaiah to take up a Rajya Sabha seat but the former CM has refused this offer, expressing his intention to focus on state politics.

This comes a day before Karnataka Congress President D.K. Shivakumar swears in as the chief minister of the state along with a dozen other ministers. They will be administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot at 4.05 pm on Wednesday at Lok Bhavan's Glass House.

Kharge, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and party General Secretaries K.C. Venugopal and Randeep Singh Surjewala will attend the ceremony. Kerala CM V.D. Satheesan, Telangana CM Revanth Redddy and chief ministers from INDIA bloc-ruled states are also expected at the event.

DK Shi, as he is fondly called, was elected leader of the Congress Legislature Party in Karnataka on May 30.

Both DKS and Siddaramaiah went to Delhi on Monday to finalise the composition of the new Karnataka cabinet. Karnataka has a cap of 34 for the council of ministers, including the CM. There could be multiple deputy chief ministers, including a Dalit. G. Paramaeshwara and Priyank Kharge are the frontrunners.

Siddaramaiah had earlier reportedly sought a deputy minister post for his son, Yathindra Siddaramaiah. But there has been no confirmation whether the high command has approved this. However, Yathindra will be given a ministerial berth.

With Shivakumar becoming CM, he will vacate the post of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president. Senior MLA Satish Jarkiholi is a frontrunner for the post, but it is not clear if he will get both the organisational post and a cabinet berth.
