The transition of power from Siddaramaiah to D. K. Shivakumar as Chief Minister of Karnataka signifies more than a leadership change, representing a handover between two distinct political figures who were instrumental in the Congress party's 2023 election victory. While both leaders belong to the same party and have navigated a shared governance arrangement, their backgrounds, political journeys, public personas, and approaches to politics differ significantly, although they both demonstrate remarkable political resilience. Siddaramaiah, from a humble shepherd family, rose through socialist movements and the Janata Parivar before joining the Congress, projecting an image of a straightforward, outspoken mass leader, with declared assets around Rs 51 crore. In contrast, Shivakumar, from an agrarian Vokkaliga background, built his career through organizational work and electoral management within the Congress, projecting an image of a strongman and troubleshooter, and is among Karnataka's wealthiest politicians with declared assets exceeding Rs 1,400 crore, facing ongoing scrutiny over disproportionate assets cases. Both leaders, despite personal and political differences, have exhibited extraordinary political survival skills, with Siddaramaiah successfully transitioning between parties and Shivakumar overcoming electoral setbacks, internal rivalries, and legal challenges to reach the Chief Minister's office, now facing the task of maintaining the broad social coalition that propelled Congress to power.

The transition of power from Siddaramaiah to D. K. Shivakumar within the Congress government in Karnataka marks more than just a change in leadership. It represents the passing of the baton between two different political personalities who together worked to bring the party to power in the 2023 Assembly elections.

Though both leaders belong to the same party and have shared power under an uneasy arrangement, almost everything else about them is different — their backgrounds, political journeys, public images, faith, lifestyles and even their approach to politics. Yet they also share some similarities.

Background

Siddaramaiah was born on August 3, 1947, into a Kuruba shepherd family in Siddaramanahundi in Mysuru district, which was then part of the erstwhile Kingdom of Mysore. He has often said that he is merely a villager with no political history in the family.

Shivakumar comes from an agrarian Vokkaliga (Gowda) family. He was born on May 15, 1962, in Doddalahalli village near Kanakapura, a politically influential Vokkaliga belt of the Old Mysuru region. Karnataka was still known as Mysore State at the time.

Education

Siddaramaiah completed his early education in Mysuru and later earned a law degree from Sharada Vilas Law College under the University of Mysore. But never grew to become a lawyer due to his entry in to political life.

Meanwhile, Shivakumar did his early education in Kanakapura and later in Bengaluru. Though he stepped into politics while pursuing his undergraduate studies, he eventually completed a Master’s degree. Interestingly, he wrote his examinations while serving as Urban Development Minister in S. M. Krishna’s cabinet in 2004. He holds an MA in Political Science.

Family

Siddaramaiah is married to Parvathi Siddaramaiah, and they have two sons, Rakesh Siddaramaiah and Yathindra Siddaramaiah. Rakesh was widely seen as his political successor until his untimely death in 2016 while visiting the Tomorrowland music festival in Belgium. This led Yathindra, a doctor by profession, to enter politics.

Shivakumar is married to Usha Shivakumar. The couple have three children — daughters Aishwarya and Abharana, and a son, Akash. Their elder daughter, Aishwarya, is married to Amartya Hegde, son of the late V. G. Siddhartha and grandson of former Chief Minister S. M. Krishna.

Shivakumar’s younger brother, D. K. Suresh, is active in politics and served as a Member of Parliament. In 2025, he was elected unopposed as president of Bengaluru Milk Union Limited (BAMUL).

Faith

Unlike public perception, Siddaramaiah has never described himself as an atheist. He has repeatedly said that he believes in a higher power but not in superstition. His house and office have pictures of Hindu gods alongside busts of Buddha and Basavanna, the founder of the Lingayat tradition.

Siddaramaiah has occasionally courted controversy because he visited temples after publicly consuming non-vegetarian food. The opposition often portrays him as anti-Hindu because of his inclusive and welfare-oriented politics. Yet, as Chief Minister, he has always been respectful towards religious institutions and was frequently seen offering prayers at the Chamundeshwari Temple during Mysuru Dasara celebrations. However, he generally keeps his faith private and rarely displays religiosity in public.

D. K. Shivakumar is a devout believer. He visits temples frequently, believes in astrology and regularly meets religious heads at mutts and ashrams for both personal and official reasons. He took a holy dip at the Sangam in Prayagraj with his wife during the recent Kumbh Mela. He is known to seek guidance from seers, including those associated with the Kadasiddeshwara Mutt at Nonavinakere in Tumakuru district.

Shivakumar wears several sacred threads on his wrists and is a strong believer in the Panchanga. Despite political differences, many in the BJP privately acknowledge him as a pro-Hindu leader. At the same time, he drew criticism from sections of the BJP for supporting the proposed 114-foot Jesus Christ statue at Kapalabetta in his constituency of Kanakapura.

Food choices

Both leaders enjoy non-vegetarian food. Siddaramaiah is particularly fond of naati koli saaru  ( local curry made from country chicken) and ragi mudde ( ragi Ball).

During the numerous breakfast meetings held whenever the power-sharing issue resurfaced, both leaders were often seen sharing dishes such as idlis and vadas.

Political growth

Siddaramaiah entered politics inspired by farmer leader M. D. Nanjundaswamy and remains one of Karnataka’s most prominent socialist politicians. He rose through the Janata Parivar before being expelled from the party led by H. D. Deve Gowda in 2005 over allegations of anti-party activities.

He later joined the Congress and went on to become one of its tallest leaders in Karnataka. A mass leader, Siddaramaiah, built his career through ideological movements, backwards-class mobilisation and legislative politics.

Shivakumar started his political journey as a student leader in the Youth Congress. Unlike Siddaramaiah, he never changed parties and remained loyal to the Congress even during its difficult years. His rise was built through organisational work, electoral management and constituency-level mobilisation.

Public image

Among the public, Siddaramaiah projects the image of a leader who speaks his mind. His blunt remarks, occasional outbursts and direct criticism of opponents have become part of his political identity. His supporters admire him for being straightforward and uncompromising. Critics view him as stubborn and confrontational.

Though he is known for advocating secular and anti-caste politics, critics point out that many members of his close political circle belong to the Kuruba community. His clean image also took a hit when the MUDA site allotment controversy emerged during his second tenure as Chief Minister.

Shivakumar carries a very different image. He is seen as a strongman who is difficult to break, a master of party management and a troubleshooter who popularised Karnataka’s resort-politics era. Many observers feel his personality changed significantly after his stint in jail, transforming him from an emotional politician into a more measured and mature leader.

Supporters see him as a leader who stands firmly by friends and party workers. Critics argue that he represents a more transactional style of politics. Many members of his close political team come from his own Vokkaliga community.

The disproportionate assets cases involving central agencies continue to cast a shadow over his public image. His supporters call them politically motivated, while critics argue that he still has legal questions to answer.

Wealth and business interests

The contrast between the two leaders is perhaps most visible in their financial profiles.

Siddaramaiah, despite spending over four decades in politics, is not generally associated with significant business interests. During the 2023 Assembly elections, he declared assets worth around Rs 51 crore. His political identity has long been that of a simple leader who usually wears a kurta, shawl and dhoti.

He owns multiple immovable properties in Bengaluru and Mysuru. However, he came under criticism in 2016 for wearing a diamond-studded Hublot luxury watch. Siddaramaiah maintained that it had been gifted by a friend, but opponents questioned the optics of a socialist leader wearing such an expensive accessory. He later donated the watch to the State Assembly.

Shivakumar is among Karnataka’s wealthiest politicians. His business interests and extensive assets have frequently attracted public attention and scrutiny. His declared wealth in the 2023 election exceeded Rs 1,400 crore, placing him among the richest politicians in the country.

He runs educational institutions and owns significant land holdings in Bengaluru and Kanakapura, along with various commercial properties. He resides in the upscale Sadashivanagar locality of Bengaluru. His expensive designer shawls and luxury watches often attract public attention.

Political survival

Both leaders share one important similarity: extraordinary political resilience.

Siddaramaiah survived multiple political shifts, moved from the Janata Parivar to the Congress and eventually became one of Karnataka’s most dominant leaders.

Shivakumar survived electoral setbacks, internal party rivalries, legal challenges and intense political battles to finally reach the Chief Minister’s office.

Both have repeatedly demonstrated an ability to recover from adversity and remain politically relevant. One emerged from the politics of social justice and welfare. The other emerged from the politics of organisation, negotiation and electoral strategy.

The challenge before Shivakumar now is to prove that he can inherit not only Siddaramaiah’s office, but also the broader social coalition that made the Congress dominant in Karnataka.
