Trinamool Congress (TMC) National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee was heckled on Saturday by locals at the Kamrabad region of Sonarpur, on the outskirts of Kolkata.
With little police support, Banerjee, who arrived in a motorcycle, was met by slogans calling him a "thief", prompting him to wear a helmet to protect himself.
He then got off the motorcycle, after which the angry crowd pushed it down. Eggs, shoes and mud were also thrown at the TMC MP.
“It has been a month (since BJP is in power) and see the situation,” remarked Abhishek Banerjee.
This, however, did not stop the TMC MP from going to a party supporter’s house to meet the victim’s family, who were killed in post-poll violence. He stayed for almost an hour.
Central and state police forces later reached the spot, to get the situation under control and escort him out from the area.
After the area was cordoned off about two hours after his visit, he was finally escorted out, amid protests by residents.
Abhishek is currently undergoing treatment at the Apollo Hospital, which prompted an angry reaction from TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee.
“We did not get anything, not a blanket or any facilities,” said an angry resident.
“This is his own doing," another resident said.
Another supporter said that they were denied basic facilities during the erstwhile government’s rule, and added that they did not support the TMC.
The angry crowd also demanded answers from the TMC leader.
Many women also questioned why he made certain comments during election campaigns, and how they were made to feel unsafe at the time.
They also questioned why he never visited the family of the RG Kar Hospital rape victim in 2024, but only came to Sonarpur now to show sympathy.
“The atrocities inflicted on us by Trinamool Congress ... Today they are in this state because of their doing,” alleged BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya, who cited the TMC's election loss as the reason for the incident.
