The Central Bureau of Investigation (CID) served a notice to Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee at his residence concerning a forgery scandal involving Leader of Opposition Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, where signatures, including Banerjee's, on a letter are alleged to have been forged by some MLAs. Banerjee acknowledged receiving the notice and stated he would act after consulting his lawyer, affirming his willingness to cooperate with investigations and reiterating his past cooperation with the ED and CBI, while also criticizing those he implied were facing investigations themselves. This development occurs amidst the TMC's challenges, including post-poll violence victim visits and ongoing accusations of corruption, with Banerjee asserting his fearlessness in the face of such allegations and legal actions, and also refuting TMC's involvement in the Narada sting operation, particularly in relation to Suvendu Adhikari's alleged involvement.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CID) were at Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee’s house on Harish Mukherjee Road to serve him a notice on Saturday. This notice was in connection with the forgery scandal of Leader of Opposition (LoP) Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, where the signatures of several MLAs, along with that of Abhishek Banerjee, are on a letter.

Some MLAs allege they did not sign and that their signatures were forged, following which the secretary of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly filed an FIR stating that some signatures did not match those as per the records.

Earlier, CID, along with handwriting experts, visited MLAs Nayna Bandyopadhyay, Baharul Islam, Kunal Ghosh and Chandranath Sinha.

“They handed me a notice; I received it. I have not yet read the notice,” said Abhishek Banerjee outside his Kalighat road house, while saying that he will take action after discussions with his lawyer.

Banerjee said if he is called anywhere, he will go. CID had gone to his Harish Mukherjee road house and waited for an hour to hand over the notice to the TMC MP.

Banerjee reportedly has been called for questioning on Monday by the CID.

“I have nothing to hide. In the past, when ED and CBI had summoned me to Delhi, I cooperated with investigations,” said Banerjee, who said he has appeared 10-12 times in front of investigating agencies in Kolkata and Delhi. “I did not run away.”

Banerjee said he will go about his professional obligations, which include meeting families of TMC victims affected due to post-poll violence.

Earlier in the day, he visited a victim’s family in the Beleghata area along with MLA Kunal Ghosh and later is slated to visit another victim’s family in Sonarpur area. The TMC MP alleged that BJP workers were issuing threats while he went to meet the victim’s families, while the police are mere bystanders, trying to save their jobs. This is the first time in 26 days since the election results on May 4 that the Diamond Harbour MP is stepping out in public for party work.

“We will not move away from the field of fight. I am not someone to bow my head. You asked me about KMC (Kolkata Municipal Corporation). I have given a reply to the KMC notice. We moved the High Court in the last few days and filed a case. If anyone thinks they can call me, scare me, threaten me, implicate me in a false case and jail me, I am not afraid,” said Banerjee.

He also hit out at Adhikari without taking names, saying that those who had ED and CBI hanging over their heads are today giving big speeches. “None of the previous chief ministers have been seen on TV taking money. The current chief minister has been seen shamelessly extending his hand and taking bribes. They call us thieves?” questioned Abhishek.

Abhishek also refuted TMC’s involvement with the Narada sting operation, where people resembling TMC leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari, who was with the TMC, were seen taking money.

“Yes, he was with Trinamool. Did Trinamool tell him to take money? If it did, then he would have taken money sitting inside the party office. In 2018-19, when investigations took place in the Narada case, he did not comply. Why is he going to the BJP and talking today?” said the TMC MP, while showing he is not scared of being intimidated and openly hit out at Adhikari.

TMC is reeling under extortion and corruption charges against their leaders, which are some reasons for their downfall in the 2026 assembly elections after three terms of being in power in West Bengal.

While former Chief Minister and Abhishek’s aunt, Mamata Banerjee, lost her Bhabanipur seat too, the party was reduced to 80 seats from the previous 215 seats in the 294-member state assembly. With several party leaders speaking out against them, the latest allegations of signatures being forged are another concern the TMC has to deal with.
