What started out as a protest march over the Baruipur rape and murder case by the Mamata Banerjee faction of Trinamool Congress (TMC) youth wing supporters snowballed into the angry party supremo seen slapping her party supporter.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when Mamata was trying to control the crowd.

The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday had permitted the TMC to hold a rally within a stipulated route and time with less than thousand people.

The rally route was from Ballygunge Phari to Hazra in South Kolkata from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM. BJP supporters had disrupted the rally chanting Jai Shree Ram and chor (thief) slogans. Eggs were also allegedly thrown during the rally.

Kolkata police and central security forces were trying to control crowds. Mamata, however, alleged that the police did not take adequate action.

“Police have become BJP’s main organ," alleged Mamata Banerjee, adding that "total lawlessness is going on”.

The Mamata camp also noted that it would approach the Calcutta HC with a contempt petition, alleging that 41 of its workers were brutally assaulted, and had to be admitted to the government-run SSKM hospital.

The party also alleged that women workers were attacked and molested.

Though Mamata had not joined the protest march to avoid bringing in large crowds, she was seen outside her Kalighat residence attempting to control the angry crowds.

“I stepped out of my residence after hearing about the attacks, and within a short distance, I saw the violence escalating further. The police did not come forward to rescue our workers. I strongly criticise what I consider the police's passive and negligent role," she pointed out.

“People did not see Mamata at the rally and hence were angry," claimed BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya. He also said no one had stopped them from walking in the rally.

Mamata had walked in a candlelight march on Monday to protest against the Baruipur rape case, despite security forces deployed outside her Kalighat residence since Sunday night.

Mamata had alleged that she was under house arrest and being prevented from meeting the victim’s family in Baruipur, whom she had spoken to over the phone.
