With D. K. Shivakumar poised to take over as Karnataka’s chief minister, discussions have reportedly begun over the next president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), with Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi emerging as the frontrunner.

Alongside the leadership transition, the Congress high command is planning a major organisational reshuffle in the state. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who is expected to announce his resignation later today, has reportedly sought key positions within the party for his supporters.

Among Congress functionaries, Jarkiholi is seen as an acceptable organisational leader capable of maintaining harmonious relations across factions. Acknowledging the ongoing discussions, Jarkiholi told reporters in Delhi on Tuesday, “If the party leaders ask me to take up any responsibility, I will consider it and convey my opinion to the high command.”

According to the Hindustan Times, Congress leaders believe Jarkiholi’s administrative experience, social outreach, and non-confrontational image have strengthened his standing within the party.

“Satish Jarkiholi is being discussed seriously because he has administrative experience, organisational exposure, and support among backward classes, Dalits, and tribal communities,” a party functionary said.

Other potential candidates for the KPCC chief’s post include Industries Minister M. B. Patil, former Bengaluru Rural MP D.K. Suresh, and Home Minister G. Parameshwara.

Historically, the KPCC chief’s position in Karnataka has often served as a stepping stone to the chief ministership. According to a New Indian Express report, Satish Jarkiholi has expressed his aspiration to become chief minister by 2028, making the party president’s post a crucial platform for his long-term political positioning.

The report further notes that several leaders in Karnataka have ascended to the chief ministership after successfully leading the party organisation to electoral victories.

Jarkiholi is viewed as a leader capable of consolidating support from backward classes, Dalits, and minority communities. Through his potential elevation, the high command is believed to be carefully balancing regional, caste, and factional equations in its deliberations during the ongoing power transition.
