A medical team from All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi has arrived in Bhopal to conduct a second post-mortem examination of actor-model Twisha Sharma, who was found hanging at her marital home earlier this month.
Twisha’s body, currently kept at the mortuary of AIIMS Bhopal, will undergo a fresh autopsy on Sunday following directions from the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
Acting on the court’s order, Chief of Forensic Medicine at AIIMS Delhi, Dr Sudhir Gupta, constituted a four-member medical board comprising senior forensic experts. According to Dr Gupta, the team travelled to Bhopal in a state-chartered aircraft carrying advanced forensic equipment for the examination.
Twisha’s family had requested an independent and multidisciplinary review of the case, alleging that several concerns were not adequately addressed during the first post-mortem conducted in Bhopal. They urged the panel to adopt forensic, pathological and radiological methods while re-examining the body.
The medical board is also expected to inspect the residence where Twisha was found dead.
The 33-year-old actor-model, a native of Noida, had allegedly faced mental harassment and dowry-related abuse from her in-laws, according to her family. Her in-laws, however, claimed she was struggling with drug addiction.
Twisha’s husband, Samarth Singh, was arrested from Jabalpur on May 22 after allegedly evading police for several days. Samarth — the lawyer son of former judge and Bhopal consumer court chairperson Giribala Singh — was brought to the Katara Hills police station on Saturday morning.
A Bhopal court has remanded him to seven days of police custody, while Giribala Singh has reportedly been served a notice seeking cancellation of her bail over alleged non-cooperation with investigators.
The case has triggered widespread outrage across the country, prompting the Madhya Pradesh government to recommend a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Saturday took suo motu cognisance of the matter over alleged institutional bias and procedural lapses in the investigation. A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M. Pancholi is scheduled to hear the matter on May 25.
