The suspect involved in a shooting near the White House in Washington has died after being taken to hospital, the Secret Service confirmed.

The incident unfolded on Saturday near the checkpoint at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. According to officials, the suspect approached the area, pulled a gun from a bag, and opened fire at officers. Officers returned fire, injuring both the gunman and a bystander during the exchange.

The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities have not yet determined whether the bystander was struck by bullets fired by the suspect or by return fire from officers.

This incident remains under investigation and additional information will be released as it becomes available, the Secret Service said in a statement.

According to a Reuters report, the suspect had been identified as an emotionally disturbed individual and was previously under a “stay-away order.”

Donald Trump was reportedly inside the White House at the time of the shooting. The incident comes nearly a month after what law enforcement officials described as an assassination attempt against Trump on April 25, during the annual White House Correspondents' Association Dinner at a Washington hotel.

Journalists stationed at the White House said they heard multiple gunshots and were instructed to shelter inside the press briefing room, according to an Associated Press report.

Senior ABC News White House correspondent Selina Wang shared a dramatic video from the scene on social media. In the footage, gunshots can be heard in the background as Wang’s expression visibly changes before she ducks for cover inside the media tent, one of several set up along the White House driveway where broadcasters typically deliver live reports.
