At least 100 people have died over the last 24 hours as the storm in Uttar Pradesh rages on, with rescue operations already underway on a war footing.
The violent storm has brought rain and hail to a number of areaas in the state, with some dying due to falling trees and collapsing walls, among other reasons, a number of reports said, citing disaster relief officials.
The latest numbers from Uttar Pradesh's Relief Commissioner Harikesh Bhaskar indicate that 104 people had died in the terrible storm, in addition to 52 injured.
The storm has also dealt a great deal of damage to livestock and infrastructure, with 130 animals killed and 98 houses damaged across the state.
According to an Indian Express report, the worst-hit district was Prayagraj, which reported 21 deaths, followed by Mirzapur (19), Sant Ravidas Nagar-Bhadohi (14), Fatehpur (11), and Bareilly (2).
The main reason for most of the deaths was found to be falling trees, collapsing structures/walls/roofs, and flying objects.
Notably, despite Bareilly having just two deaths, a viral video of a man from there being flung into the air by powerful storm winds has become the most recognisable visual from the unrelenting storm across the state.
The man, identified as Nanhe Mian, is a labourer from Bareilly, and is alive, but seriously fractured.
He told ANI that he sustained a fracture requiring a metal plate, in addition to multiple injuries all over his body, as the strong winds swept him away while he had been working, and threw him about 80 feet away from where he had been working.
Looking ahead the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow alerts for a number of regions in the North-west and South-east parts of the state, which includes areas such as Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Mathura, Hathras, Ghaziabad, Allahabad, and Varanasi.
These regions have received warnings for more thunderstorms and rain on Friday, in addition to heatwaves forecast in the southern parts of the state, and gusty winds as strong as 60 km/h.
