Even as TVK leadership is finalising Cabinet formation and alliance with Congress and other regional parties, it has been revealed that Vijay is set to be sworn in as chief minister on May 7.
The TVK has arranged accommodation for its MLA-elects in a resort in Mamallapuram ahead of the oath-taking ceremony. The swearing-in will be held at Nehru Indoor Stadium and more than 5,000 people have been invited to the ceremony.
Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has secured 108 constituencies in 234-member Tamil Nadu assembly, falling short by 10 seats.
"We request an opportunity to demonstrate our majority," Vijay had said in an e-mail to the governor.
Congress, which has won five seats in the assembly elections, is likely to be a key ally of TVK, while other DMK allies including VCK, CPI, CPI(M) and IUML might also join the ruling coalition.
The Congress high command has directed Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) to take a final decision to ally with TVK. AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal urged Congress leaders in the state to heed to the sentiments of the state, which was reflected in the election verdict.
"The President of TVK Thiru Vijay has requested the Congress for support to form a government in Tamil Nadu. INC is clear that the mandate in Tamil Nadu is for a secular government committed to protecting the Constitution in letter and spirit," said Venugopal.
He said the Congress is determined not to have the BJP and its proxies in the Tamil Nadu government in any manner.
AICC in-charge for Tamil Nadu Girish Chodankar had earlier acknowledged that the Congress leadership's decision to stick with the DMK-led alliance went against strong grassroots sentiment favouring the TVK.
"The local leaders, the grassroot-level leaders, were suggesting if Rahul Gandhi, who has a large acceptance in Tamil Nadu, joins the campaign with Vijay, it will create a big impact and we can sweep the Tamil Nadu polls, and get somewhere around 180-190 seats," Chodankar told PTI.
CM MK Stalin on Tuesday evening resigned as chief minister and said the DMK will function effectively in the opposition. Though the governor has accepted the resignation, he has requested Stalin to continue as caretaker CM till alternative arrangements are in place.
The DMK secured just 59 seats while the AIADMK bagged 47 seats.
