Rains and cool winds on Wednesday morning brought significant relief for the Delhi NCR after days of sweltering heatwaves.
The temperatures in the region had reached a scorching 45 degrees Celsius in the past few days.
The IMD said that the city would receive one or two spells of very light to light rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong surface winds.
The rains are expected to continue for some time, as the IMD has issued an alert for thunderstorms in about 13 states in the northern part of the country.
Cities around the capital, like Noida and Ghaziabad, are also experiencing a cool down due to strong winds and showers. An orange alert has been issued due to the possibility of strong weather activity.
The IMD also predicted that the would be a drop in the maximum temperatures in central India by 2-3 degree celcius after April 29. However, temperatures are likely to rise again by the same percentage by May 2 and 3.
Wind speeds are likely to reach around 30-40 kmph and are likely to increase up to 50 to 60 kmph during the thunderstorms.
Meanwhile, for other parts of north-west India, including Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, hailstorm activity is to be anticipated on April 29.
Meanwhile, a yellow alert has been issued for much of the country.
Scattered rainfall is to be expected in the South peninsula, like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, South interior Karnataka and coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, with heavy rainfall in some states on April 30.
Rajasthan may experience dust storms, and Punjab and Haryana may have to brace for a thundersquall.
