Heavy rain disrupted normal life in Gujarat, leaving many regions inundated and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people. Local authorities have announced the closure of schools and colleges in the rain-affected areas as well.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe weather warning on Saturday, predicting extremely heavy rainfall. A red alert has been issued for Ahmedabad district. 

Amid heavy rainfall triggering flooding in Gujarat, the Ahmedabad District Police on Saturday closed the Ahmedabad-Viramgam Highway. 

Due to the flooding on the highway, the District Police said that no vehicle movement is allowed between Sanad and Viramgam. 

Bhavya Verma, Ahmedabad District Collector, told ANI that the situation in the district is under control. "Dholka and Viramgam received the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours. Authorities were maintaining extra vigilance in the two areas," he said. 

Around 440 people were evacuated from the flood-affected areas in Viramgam taluka as a precautionary measure. The SDRF team along with the police and local administration are carrying out the rescue operations. 

Gujarat Deputy CM Harsh Sanghavi on Friday inspected the flood-affected areas in Umargam of Valsad district as heavy rainfall continued to disrupt parts of the state. 

BJP MP Dhaval Laxmanbhai Patel said that south Gujarat witnessed extremely heavy rainfall and the entire district is severely affected by flooding. "The areas received 46 inches of rain, the third-highest recorded rainfall in India's history," Patel said. 

He also added that the government conducted a comprehensive assessment of the situation and over 12,000 people were evacuated to safe shelter. 

Delhi, Rajasthan also on alert

Heavy to very heavy rain is also likely in Rajasthan, while Delhi-NCR, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya and other northeastern states are expected to receive widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.

Light to moderate rain is expected in Delhi and the NCR areas. 

Also, Mumbai and the Konkan region are likely to receive heavy rainfall, with isolated very heavy spells possible. Waterlogging and traffic disruptions may occur in low-lying areas as monsoon conditions remain active.
