As the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East continue to destabilise global markets, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for national unity, urging citizens to come together and face the challenges ahead.

In his monthly radio address Mann Ki Baat, Modi appealed to the nation to remain vigilant and avoid falling prey to rumors.

"This is undoubtedly a challenging time. Through today’s Mann Ki Baat, I once again urge all 140 crore fellow citizens to unite and overcome these challenges. I appeal to everyone to stay vigilant and not be misled by rumors," the prime minister said.

Reflecting on the global situation, Modi noted that after the COVID-19 pandemic, the world hoped for a fresh start toward progress, but instead, conflicts and wars continued to emerge in various parts of the world.

"Currently, a fierce war has been raging for over a month in our neighborhood. Many families in India have relatives residing in these conflict zones, especially in the Gulf," he added.

Modi expressed his gratitude towards Gulf nations for their support in ensuring the safety of Indian nationals amid the turmoil. He also highlighted India’s strengthened global relations and the resilience built over the past decade, which has enabled the country to face these challenges with resolve.

The Middle East conflict began on February 28 following a joint airstrike by the US and Israel on Iran, which resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Tehran targeted Gulf nations hosting US military bases. Iran also effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil chokepoint, sending shockwaves through the global oil market and driving prices to new highs.

India has also felt the impact, with several commercial establishments, restaurants, and hotels closing due to an LPG shortage. However, Iran has agreed to allow India-bound ships to pass through the Strait, providing some relief.
