Why JD(U) seeks disqualification of its own MP from Lok Sabha

Party has submitted a notice to the Speaker, seeking the disqualification of Girdhari Yadav

In an unusual move, the Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United) has submitted a notice to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, seeking the disqualification of its own member of parliament, Girdhari Yadav.

The notice, submitted by Dileshwar Kamit, the party's leader in the Lok Sabha, cites anti-party activities as the grounds for the request.

Although the exact reasons for the move remain unclear, reports suggest that internal tensions within the party have escalated after Yadav’s son contested the recent assembly elections on a Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) ticket. The JD(U) has alleged that Yadav violated party discipline by actively supporting his son's campaign.

Yadav, who represents Banka in the lower house, was once considered a close ally of the chief minister. However, his relationship with the party soured following the assembly elections.

Reports indicate that there were multiple instances in which Yadav, a former MLA from the Belhar assembly seat, publicly made statements that contradicted the party's position.

He targeted the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), terming it as a "Tughlaki decree". He claimed that the process had caused significant problems for ordinary citizens. The JD(U) issued a show-cause notice to Yadav over the remarks, which were made just ahead of the assembly elections.

Earlier, in July 2025, the party had issued a show-cause notice after Yadav made statements about the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The JD(U) maintained that it had always supported EVMs, both as part of the INDIA alliance and now as a member of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The party observed that Yadav’s comments not only caused embarrassment but also lent undue credibility to "baseless and politically motivated allegations" made by the opposition.
