Prime Minister Narendra Modi's helicopter returned to Kolkata airport after it failed to land at the Taherpur helipad in West Bengal due to low visibility on account of dense fog in the area on Saturday.

Modi is scheduled to address a rally in the Nadia district, his public meeting in the state after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the Election Commission commenced. He is also scheduled to hold an administrative programme to launch highway projects in West Bengal.

It wasn't immediately clear if Modi would reach the rally venue district by road or whether he would wait for the weather to clear up and make another attempt to reach Taherpur by the aerial route.

Earlier, Modi reached Kolkata at 10.40 am and left for Taherpur on a special chopper.

Meanwhile, political tension in West Bengal has heightened following the release of the draft electoral rolls, with non-BJP parties alleging that the exercise is being carried out in haste and that a large number of genuine voters—particularly refugee Hindus—risk disenfranchisement as a result.

In his speech, Modi is expected to address growing unease among the Matuas, a Dalit Hindu community that migrated from Bangladesh over several decades due to religious persecution, as the SIR has revived anxieties within the community over identity and documentation.

The community has been a major vote bank for the BJP over the years, but reports suggest that a significant number of its members have already been excluded from the draft electoral rolls.
