Bangladesh National Citizen Party leader Hasnat Abdullah’s anti-India statements was met with a cryptic warning from a former Indian Army Colonel, which triggered  Bangladesh. Hasnat has been threatening India for the last few days, eyeing the  upcoming Bangladesh elections, stating, “Dhaka should isolate India's northeastern states and support separatist militants in the region”.

Hasnat is the party's nominated candidate for Comilla-4 (Debidwar) constituency.

To his statements spewing venom against India, Raina wrote: ‘Hasnat after Hadi' without giving other details. Colonel (retd) Raina is a security analyst and author of about 30  books.

This post has triggered Bangladeshis who interpreted it as a “direct threat against political figures in the country”. Some also interpreted it as a possible link to the attack on Bangladeshi leader and Inqilab Manch spokesperson Osman Hadi. A radical leader who was at the forefront of ousting Sheikh Hasina, Hadi was shot at by unidentified gunmen  in Dhaka last week and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Singapore.

Hadi was at the forefront of a campaign to disband the Awami League, which the interim  government complied with in May this year, disqualifying the party from contesting the polls. The attack was interpreted as a breakdown of law and order in the country ahead of the upcoming elections.

Raina explained his post in a sarcastic tone, stating there was no need to be overly sensitive about social media posts.

However, Bangladeshi media has embarked on a rumour-mongering, pinning the attack on Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country almost a year ago, while maintaining a silence on the threatening language used by the Bangladeshi leaders against India. Several local media reports claimed audio clips of Sheikh Hasina have been leaked on social media after the assassination attempt on Hadi, wherein she was heard making provocative remarks.

Hasnat, meanwhile, continued his tirade against India, stating the Indian High Commissioner should not only be threatened but should be expelled immediately “for sheltering the murderer Hasina.” He also baselessly claimed that atleast 30,000 Awami League workers have taken refuge in India without visas and passports.
