A man in Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, was arrested for allegedly murdering his wife and two young daughters over a dispute regarding wearing a burqa. He confessed to burying their bodies in a septic tank at their home

A man from Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, allegedly murdered his wife and two minor daughters over not wearing a burqa. He had buried their bodies in the septic tank inside the house.

The accused is a resident of Garhi Daulat village, located within the Kandhla police station area.

According to police, Farooq confessed to shooting his wife, Tahia, 32, while she was preparing tea at home on December 10. He also hit his elder daughter, Afreen, 12, after she tried to intervene. He then strangled his younger daughter, Sahreen, who was aged 5.

He had buried all their bodies in a seven-foot-deep pit he had dug earlier for a toilet in the courtyard of the house.

Police have recovered the bodies for a post-mortem on Wednesday, six days after the murder.

Farooq's father, Dawood, had complained to the police on Tuesday after the three went missing on December 10. The head of the village had also grown suspicious and lodged another complaint before the police took Farooq into custody

The man had confessed during the police interrogation and said that he was angry his wife had left the house without a hijab.

The victim's family staged a protest and tried to confront the accused, who had been arrested. Police have tightened security around the village and deployed more personnel.
