Cyclone Montha updates: Storm weakens but IMD issues heavy rainfall warning across India until Nov 2

Although the severe cyclonic storm 'Montha', which made its landfall in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday evening, has weakened into a moderate cyclonic storm, it will continue to head northwest at a speed of about 10 kmph, causing showers in Bihar and Odisha.

As per the latest IMD forecast, districts including West Champaran, Kaimur, Banka, Rohtas, Gaya, Sheikhpura, and Nawada are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall on Wednesday as the cyclone’s outer bands move northward.

“The cloud mass associated with Cyclonic Storm Montha over coastal Andhra Pradesh is active. It will move north-northwestwards across coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and weaken into a deep depression during the next three hours and into a depression during the subsequent six hours.

According to weather experts, the next 24 hours will be crucial for coastal Andhra Pradesh,  Odisha, Telangana, and southern Chhattisgarh. A warning has been issued for strong winds  and heavy rainfall. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.

Overall weather analysis

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in many parts of the country for the next few days. According to the Meteorological Department, continuous rain and strong winds are expected in many states of the southern peninsular, eastern, central, and northeastern India until November 2nd.

Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are likely over Kerala and Mahe, coastal Karnataka, and north interior Karnataka on October 29. Heavy to very heavy rain warnings have been issued for Telangana, Rayalaseema, and coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Rain and thunderstorms are expected over Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal for the next four days. Extremely heavy rainfall is expected over southern Chhattisgarh on October 29, while very heavy rainfall is expected over Bihar, eastern Madhya Pradesh, and sub-Himalayan West Bengal on October 30-31.

Thunderstorms with gusty winds of 50-60 kmph are possible in Vidarbha and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on October 28-29. According to the IMD, light to moderate rainfall is expected in western India, including Konkan-Goa, Marathwada, Central Maharashtra, and Gujarat, until October 31. Very heavy rainfall is expected in the Saurashtra-Kutch region during this period.
