At least five people died and one was critically injured on Saturday after the black Mahindra Thar they were travelling in rammed into a highway divider near the Jharsa Flyover on the Gurugram-Delhi-Jaipur Highway (NH-48).
The accident occurred at around 4:30 AM as the Thar, carrying 6 people from Uttar Pradesh towards Gurugram, attempted to exit National Highway 48 via Exit 9 (Rajiv Chowk exit).
According to the police, the SUV had been travelling at a high speed, causing the driver to lose control and hit the divider in a collision severe enough to kill 4 of the passengers on the spot.
The remaining two were taken out of the wrecked Thar and rushed to the hospital, where one succumbed to their injuries and died, while the other remains in a critical condition.
Officials say the three men and three women in the car were headed to Gurugram for some work.
The police are currently trying to identify all the passengers and to establish the circumstances of the accident.
This comes after a woman accidentally drove a Mahindra Thar through the glass wall of a showroom in Delhi's Preet Vihar, right after purchasing that SUV. The car had been located on the first floor of the showroom. No one was hurt in the incident, which took place earlier this month.
Just a month ago, a biker died after a collision with a speeding Thar in Delhi's Moti Nagar area. The accused driver, Amarinder Singh Sodhi, who was purported to be drunk at the time, fled the scene, leaving his Thar behind. Two bottles of alcohol were found in it.
