Cop's son driving Mercedes loses control; 70-year-old killed amid collision with WagonR

An elderly woman was killed in a tragic car accident in Delhi's Narela area on Saturday, even though she was not inside any of the vehicles that crashed.

Identifying her as 70-year-old Urmila from the Mamurpur area of Narela, local news reports say that she died on the spot during the collision, brought on by a Mercedes car speeding out of control.

Eyewitnesses have said that the driver seemed intoxicated, though the police have yet to verify this.

The police also said that the speeding Mercedes car was registered in the name of a man named Arjun Singh, a resident of Pocket 6 in Narela's Sector A-10, as per an Aaj Tak report.

Its number plate had also allegedly been tampered with, in order to avoid a challan—it had different numbers on the front and back, with the number '9' changed to '8' using tape.

However, they also found that it had not been Arjun driving the Mercedes—it was his friend Shubham, the son of a police Sub-Inspector in Haryana, who had borrowed it earlier for travelling.

At about 8 AM on Saturday, the Mercedes car collided head-on into a WagonR at full speed, which sent the latter shooting backwards.

The force of the impact was so much that the WagonR itself crashed into a three-wheeler loading van parked nearby.

Though Urmila had not been inside any of these vehicles, she was unfortunately caught in the collision, which led to her death on the spot.

The WagonR driver suffered minor injuries and was provided medical treatment, though the extent of injuries faced by Shubham is not yet known.

The police have registered a case and are currently probing the exact circumstances that led to the collision, while Urmila's body has been sent for post-mortem.
