The Union home ministry has appointed senior police officer Satish Golcha as the new Delhi police commissioner. The development comes following a recent assault on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
Satish Golcha has been appointed as the 26th commissioner of the Delhi police. The 1992-batch IPS officer has replaced SBK Singh, who took up additional charge as Commissioner of police force in the national capital on July 31, after his predecessor Sanjay Arora's retirement. Singh was appointed as Delhi police commissioner on August 1.
Golcha is currently the Director General of Tihar Jail. Golcha has served in various important positions, including special commissioner of police (Law and order), special commissioner (Intelligence) in Delhi police, and Director General of Police (DGP) of Arunachal Pradesh. He has also served as deputy police commissioner and joint commissioner of police with the Delhi police.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was allegedly attacked by a visitor at her official residence during the weekly Jan Sunvai on Wednesday. The attacker, identified as Rajesh Sakariya (41), hails from Gujarat, and he entered the premises posing as a complainant. Sakariya is an autorickshaw driver in Rajkot.

According to reports, Sakariya allegedly attacked Gupta over the recent Supreme Court's directions to control the stray dog menace in the national capital. Reportedly, Sakariya is a dog lover. However, police suspect a bigger conspiracy behind his attack against the Delhi chief minister. "The accused is claiming that he was upset over the Supreme Court order on dogs, but we suspect something more deep. He slapped the chief minister and attacked her,” a police officer told PTI.
Following the attack, the Centre has accorded Z-category CRPF security to the chief minister. Sakariya has been remanded to five days of police custody and he has been booked under various charges, including attempt-to-murder.
