The heavy downpour in Mumbai has left the city underwater, especially in Dadar, Matunga, Sion, Andheri, and Parel, throwing life off track due to heavy waterlogging. The IMD has predicted heavy to extremely heavy rain in Mumbai and the suburbs, accompanied by strong winds at a speed of 45 to 55 kmph.
While the forecast is bleak, there is a very low chance of a respite from the flood-like situation on Tuesday, due to the high tide. During the high tide phenomenon, the sea level rises higher than normal. The alert said the waves rose to 3.75 meters on Tuesday around 9:15 am, while the waves of 3.14 meters high are expected at around at 8:53 pm. This has prompted the BMC to issue an alert to employees to ensure they reach home before 4 pm. Footage from Marine Drive showed strong waves lashing the shores.
The BMC has warned that the combination of heavy rains and high tides can hinder the flow of water from low-lying areas of the city to the sea. That, coupled with clogged drains in the city, could add to the water logging.
The Meteorological Department has advised citizens to be cautious and stay away from the seashore and waterlogged areas. The administration has intensified efforts to ensure the drainage of water through pumps in the low-lying areas of the city like Hindmata.
According to officials, in the 24 hours till 8 am on Tuesday, Mumbai alone received 186.43 mm of rain. On the other hand, the eastern suburbs received 208.78 mm of rain, and the western suburbs recorded an average rainfall of 238.19 mm.
